A break from norms

From virtual National Party Conventions, to abrasive presidential debates through to questioning of electoral processes and votes, the US elections provided a spectacle to add the uniqueness of 2020.

National Party Conventions where presumptive nominees formally become presidential candidates are usually large colourful events in the USA’s election calendar. The current pandemic caused major disruptions to planned events, that were recalibrated in accordance with State regulations. The four-day Democratic event originally planned to take place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin took place from remote locations, with Joe Biden delivering his acceptance speech over a live video stream from his home in Delaware.

The Republican National Convention took place with limited in-person participation, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Unlike previous RNCs where participants adopt a ‘platform’/manifesto the Republicans passed a one-page resolution stating that the party ‘has and will continue to enthusiastically support the president’s America-first agenda’.
